Sawn timber and solid wood

Chestnut timber. For furniture, ceilings and flooring.

Solid wood with a distinctive grain, for building and renovating interiors. At Vela, choose unedged boards, boules or sawn sections to suit the pieces you want to make.

What you can make

Wood worth leaving on show.

Chestnut works well with joinery tools and takes finishes well. Its grain gives character to a single piece of furniture or a larger surface.

Tables and furniture

For tops, doors and shelves that show off the wood. Arranging the boards lets you shape the grain pattern across the surface.

Exposed timber ceilings

For boarding that leaves the wood visible overhead. Colour, knots and grain help retain the character of traditional interiors during renovation.

Solid wood flooring

For making floorboards with chestnut’s natural grain. Widths, board matching and finish shape the floor’s appearance, from more uniform to more rustic.

The photographs of interiors and the table show work by third parties. This page concerns the supply of sawn timber.

Choose your starting point

Three forms to suit the job.

The form describes how the wood is supplied. The grade helps you choose the appearance and characteristics of the pieces you need.

Unedged boards
The natural edges are retained. You choose where to cut tops, doors and other pieces, following the grain and the size of each board.
Boules
Boards from the same log, kept in sequence: useful for planning how to match them across larger surfaces. The range includes the “Primo fusto” butt-log selection.
Sawn timber sections
Boards 30 mm thick in defined widths: a starting point for ceiling boarding or floorboards, with the grade chosen for the job.
Chestnut boule with boards stacked in the sequence of the log
A boule keeps the boards in the sequence of the log.

Samples are indicative: colour, grain and knots are assessed on the proposed material.

Sottotetto or Pavimento?

Two grades for different needs. Choose according to how the board will be seen and used.

Sottotetto · visible-roof or soffit grade

For visible roofs and soffits: this grade allows a more rustic appearance and a higher proportion of the paler outer wood.

Pavimento · flooring grade

A stricter selection of the visible face and defects that could affect use underfoot, for pieces intended for flooring.

Sawn sections are timber for further machining. The machining and finish needed to make them ready to install must be specified.

Need a specific origin?

We supply chestnut from France, Italy and local sources. If origin matters for your project, let us know: we check it against the proposed material.

Primo fusto, coppice timber and grades explained
Butt-log selection
Material cut from the basal section of the stem, up to the first major branches or fork. It generally provides larger diameters and fewer knots; actual appearance and grade are confirmed for each boule.
Coppice-grown chestnut
Timber from young shoots or stems grown in coppice woodland. It often has straight, slender stems, a paler colour and a higher proportion of sapwood; characteristics and stability must be checked for each batch.
Orchard-grown or mature high-forest chestnut
Timber from mature trees grown in chestnut orchards or high forest. It generally shows more heartwood, warmer tones and broader figure; appearance and characteristics vary by supply.
Visible-roof or soffit grade
Commercial selection mainly intended for visible roofs and soffits, with wider acceptance of sapwood and rustic surface defects. Drying, machining and finishing are not automatically included and must be specified separately.
Flooring grade
Stricter commercial selection for material intended for flooring, with closer control of the visible face, sapwood and defects that could affect use underfoot. Final moisture, calibration, tongue-and-groove machining and back relief grooves are separate requirements.

Sapwood is the paler outer wood; heartwood is the inner wood. Porrina and domestico describe how the tree grew, not its geographical origin.
